Der Skoda Superb muss nicht immer eine "Combi"-Variante sein.

Skoda is currently enjoying a period of success, which they aim to maintain by updating their significant models. The Superb, their flagship vehicle, is undergoing a complete overhaul, and its sedan variant may leave some "Combi" enthusiasts feeling uncertain.

In the 4.90-meter segment, large sedans at budget prices are becoming increasingly rare. The Passat is the only exception from Volkswagen, but they have ceased producing traditional sedans due to declining demand.

The new Superb is available in both body styles and starts at €38,480 for the sedan version.

Attention to Practicality

Skoda is known for its practicality, and the Superb follows suit with a flowing rear hatch and a lift-up rear door instead of a simple trunk lid. This design allows for easier loading of large items and provides more storage space. The sedan offers 645 liters of luggage capacity, with a maximum capacity of 1,790 liters when the rear seats are folded. This is almost the same as the Combi version, but with a more elegant appearance and lower noise levels. The sedan is also more affordable by €1,100 compared to the Combi.

Shares Platform and Skills with VW Passat

Die Skoda Superb Limousine verfügt über eine oben angeschlagene Heckklappe.

Like the Passat, the Superb is built on the same platform in Bratislava. This means it inherits all the advantages of the Volkswagen, such as ample interior space, exceptional suspension, and a complete suite of modern assistance systems. The Superb's interior is particularly user-friendly. Although the Czech model still uses a 7-speed double-clutch transmission, it's not as comfortable as a traditional automatic and can be quite loud and disruptive during parking. It could also benefit from an additional gear or two, as competitors offer.

Four Drive Options to Choose From

Skoda is introducing four drive options for the Superb, which are compatible with up to three equipment levels (Essence, Selection, L+K).

On the gasoline side, there's a 1.5-liter producing 110 kW/150 PS (€38,480) and a 2.0-liter with 195 kW/265 PS and all-wheel drive (€49,600).

The diesel options are more familiar: The 2.0-liter turbocharged power plants have 110 kW/150 PS and 142 kW/193 PS, with the latter featuring all-wheel drive. In the first half of 2025, a plug-in hybrid model (€51,350) will be available, with an impressive 120-kilometer all-electric range. Later, the middle 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 105 kW/240 PS will also be introduced.

Das Interieur ist eine Mischung aus digital und analog.

For frequent drivers, the diesel engines are the most suitable choice, with the smaller 150 PS version particularly adept at propelling the Czechs measuring 4.91 meters long and weighing around 1.6-1.7 tons in this configuration. For those who prefer faster highway speeds, the larger diesel is the better option. The smaller gasoline engine is better suited for more cautious drivers who are mindful of costs, while the large gasoline engine caters to those seeking a sportier experience. Fleet drivers may wait for the future and order the plug-in, primarily due to its 0.5% taxation.

Thoughtful Extras

Skoda has a reputation for implementing clever solutions appreciated by its fans. Some of these include the umbrella in the driver's door and the ice scraper in the fuel cap. A new addition is a "cleaning station" for the touchscreen, a feature that makes you wonder why other manufacturers hadn't thought of it first, given the frequently smudged displays.

Conclusion

Skoda's focus on practicality earns them loyalty from their fans. The new Superb is a standout model, deserving of its title as the flagship of the Skoda range. Its value for money remains significant, even though their products are no longer as inexpensive as they once were. The Superb is a strong offering, especially when compared to Volkswagen alternatives and expensive German premium cars. [The main points to be kept in mind while paraphrasing are: Skoda's success, the Superb sedan being completely redeveloped, limited availability of large sedans at affordable prices, Skoda's practical vehicle concept, Superb's similarities with VW Passat, available drive options, practical extras in Superb. -Ant]
