After his injury at Wimbledon on his left knee, Zverev's participation in the tournament in his hometown was uncertain for a long time. He completed his first training session on the historic court in the Hanseatic city on the previous Friday. Further fitness tests followed. The originally scheduled first round match against Tuesday was postponed by 24 hours in consultation with the tournament organizer.

Following Zverev's match, Maximilian Marterer will play his second round match. The Nuremberg native, who was given a wildcard to enter the main draw, faces Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, seeded fourth.
