World record price for whisky: 2.1 million pounds
An almost 100-year-old Scotch whisky has achieved a world record price at an auction in London: The bottle of "The Macallan 1926 Adami" fetched more than 2.1 million pounds, according to the auction house Sotheby's. The whisky from the Macallan distillery in the Speyside region went for exactly 2,187,500 pounds (equivalent to just under 2.5 million euros) - the estimated price was just 750,000 to 1.2 million pounds. The auction price significantly exceeded the record set in the fall of 2019. At that time, a 0.75-liter bottle of "The Macallan 1926 Fine and Rare" was auctioned for just under £1.5 million.
The record-breaking whiskies come from a legendary stock: a total of 40 bottles were filled from one cask in 1986. Of these, 14 bear the "Fine and Rare" label and 12 others a label designed by the Italian painter Valerio Adami in 1993. The bottle now on offer is also the first to have been refurbished by the Macallan distillery, Sotheby's explained. Both the capsule and the cork have been replaced. New glue had also been applied to the corners of the label. Finally, a sample of one milliliter was taken to compare the whisky with another bottle from 1926.
The 'The Macallan 1926 Adami' whisky, which was filled from a cask in 1986, set a new world record at an auction, selling for an astounding 2,187,500 pounds. Surprisingly, despite the high auction price, the estimated price for this rare whisky was only between 750,000 and 1.2 million pounds.
