construction site - Work on the roof of Dresden Hauptbahnhof is progressing
At the construction site at Dresden's Main Station, progress is being made. The work on the roof should be completed by late autumn, the railway announced. In the third and final phase, the construction site switched to the southwestern side at the beginning of July. The Wiener Platz is now closed along the station building, and there is currently no train traffic on platforms 11 and 12.
The renovation of the roof began in 2022. In three sections, the old roofing material with a surface area of approximately 33,000 square meters will be removed and replaced with a new membrane. The costs of 44 million Euro are being shared by the Federal Government, Saxony, and the railway.
This year, 11,500 square meters of membrane will be exchanged and eight of the 18 so-called skylights will be installed, on which snow and ice can accumulate without clogging the drains below. A 69-tonne and 42-meter-high mobile crane, as well as a 224-tonne and 119-meter-high crawler crane, are being used for the work.
The work will be completely finished by the spring of 2025. Next year, final steps such as the removal of safety nets and working platforms, as well as the installation of snow collectors, will be carried out.
The construction site involves the replacement of an old gable on the southwestern side of Dresden's Main Station, which is part of the overall renovation. The renovated gable will feature eight skylights, designed to allow snow and ice to accumulate without blocking drains below. The train traffic at Wiener Platz is temporarily affected due to the construction, specifically on platforms 11 and 12.
