Donated milk for babies - Women's Milk Bank starts at Mainz University Clinic
For the optimal care of newborns, there will be a so-called Mother's Milk Bank at the Mainz University Clinic in the future. Mothers who do not have enough breast milk or are not able to breastfeed can receive donated milk from other mothers, as the Unimedizin announced before the official opening in Mainz next Wednesday. In particular, for needy newborns, this "natural and development-promoting substitute nutrition" could help reduce complications and promote health.
Rhineland-Palatinate, according to the Women's Milk Bank initiative, is the last federal state in Germany where such an offer is being introduced. Nationwide, there are already 50 of these milk banks, some of which are in several federal states. The first was founded in 1919. With the founding of Women's Milk Banks in all federal states, the 2018-founded initiative has achieved its first goal.
The team of the newly established Milk Bank in Mainz is looking for suitable donors, according to the Unimedizin. It conducts virological and microbiological examinations, portions, pseudonymizes, and stores the donated breast milk. It then supplies needy newborns with it.
- Society widely acknowledges the importance of mothers' milk for the health of prematurely born babies, making the establishment of a Mother's Milk Bank in Mainz University Clinic highly significant.
