Woman accuses Eric Adams of sexual abuse
A former employee is demanding five million dollars in compensation from Eric Adams. She is suing the Democratic mayor of New York for alleged sexual misconduct 30 years ago. Adams claims not to have known the woman. However, this is not the only accusation against him.
New York Mayor Eric Adams has been sued over allegations of sexual misconduct against a former female staff member. As the news website "The Messenger" reported, the incident took place back in 1993, when Adams and the woman worked together for the New York City administration. The plaintiff, whose name was not disclosed, is demanding a trial and compensation of at least five million dollars.
The Democratic mayor rejected the allegations. Adams did not know who this person was, a spokesman for his office said. "If they ever met, he has no recollection of it." Adams would "never do anything to physically harm another person" and "vigorously" denied any such allegation, it added.
There is currently a wave of complaints from victims of alleged sexual assault in the US state. The background to this is the expiry of a deadline in the "Adult Survivors Act". The law had given adult victims of sexual abuse one year until this Friday to file civil lawsuits for offenses that are actually already time-barred.
Among the accused are a number of celebrities, including rap mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, US actor Jamie Foxx, rock star Axl Rose and former US President Donald Trump. Combs has already reached a settlement with his ex-girlfriend to drop the case.
FBI investigates Adams on suspicion of corruption
Democrat Adams, a former police officer who took office in January 2022 as the second black mayor in New York's history, is also currently facing a corruption investigation. He is alleged to have collaborated with the Turkish government during his 2021 election campaign.
The investigation into the campaign became public in early November when FBI agents raided the home of Adams' former fundraiser Brianna Suggs and took laptops, cell phones and a folder labeled "Eric Adams". According to the New York Times, the search was looking for evidence of a conspiracy between the mayor and Turkey.
According to the report, Adams was approached by the agents after an event, who then got into his car. The agents took electronic devices belonging to the mayor, including two cell phones and an iPad, the newspaper reported, citing sources familiar with the case. The devices were returned to Adams a few days later. Following the seizure, Adams canceled a trip to Washington, where he was supposed to meet with White House officials, and remained in New York.
In light of the allegations against him, Eric Adams' mayoral tenure in New York has been marred by controversy. The FBI is also investigating Adams for suspected collaboration with the Turkish government during his 2021 election campaign, which could potentially involve corruption.
The corruption investigation gained public attention when FBI agents conducted a raid on the home of Adams' former fundraiser, Brianna Suggs. During the raid, electronic devices belonging to Adams were seized and later returned. This incident caused Adams to cancel a scheduled trip to Washington.
While Eric Adams has denied any wrongdoing in the sexual abuse allegations and corruption investigation, the recent events have cast a shadow over his leadership in the USA, particularly in New York City.
Meanwhile, in the broader context of the USA, the expiration of the "Adult Survivors Act" deadline has led to a surge in sexual abuse-related lawsuits against prominent figures, including celebrities like Sean "Diddy" Combs, Jamie Foxx, and Axl Rose, as well as former US President Donald Trump.
