Forecast - Winter weather continues with risk of black ice and fresh snow
In wintry weather with freezing rain and fresh snow in some areas of Germany, caution is advised in the coming days. This can make roads and sidewalks dangerously slippery again.
One of the reasons for this is an area of low pressure that is slowly moving eastwards and north-eastwards from the north-west across the north of Germany, explained Sabine Krüger from the German Weather Service in Offenbach on Tuesday. At the transitions between milder air masses and cold air, precipitation will form, some of which will fall as freezing rain. With cooler air again afterwards, a lot of fresh snow is also likely to fall by Thursday.
Larger amounts of fresh snow are expected in the mountains and especially in the Black Forest. On Tuesday, the DWD was already expecting up to 15 centimetres of fresh snow within six hours in the Black Forest as well as snow drifts, with up to ten centimetres more possible on Wednesday. Seven to 15 centimetres of snow could also fall within twelve hours on Wednesday in the Bavarian Forest and in congested areas of the Alps. The north of Germany should also receive a few centimetres of fresh snow.
Wednesday will be overcast in many places with intermittent precipitation falling as snow in the mountains with maximum temperatures of up to 6 degrees, in the north-east around 0 degrees. There will be light frost in the higher mountains. On Thursday, it will be partly cloudy, partly partly cloudy, with some precipitation only in the east, otherwise it will be mostly dry with temperatures between 0 and plus 6 degrees.
On Friday, there will be a few cloud gaps in the southeast and east, rain will move in from the west and southwest to the center, with the threat of black ice again in some areas. Temperatures in the west will be between plus 3 and plus 8 degrees, in the eastern half between minus 2 and plus 2 degrees.

In the mountainous regions of Germany, such as the Black Forest and the Alps, Sabine Krüger predicts significant amounts of fresh snow, potentially reaching up to 15 centimeters in the Black Forest alone. This winter weather phenomenon, which includes freezing rain and fresh snow, poses a risk of black ice and slippery conditions in mountain country, affecting travel and daily activities. The German Weather Service, headed by Krüger in Offenbach, continues to monitor and issue warnings for these weather conditions throughout Germany.
