White, stormy, mild - everything is possible at Christmas

Fog and rain showers greet the north during the Christmas week. In the south, however, high pressure system "Fiona" will bring sunshine. From the middle of the week, things get stormy with "Xavi". The low pressure makes for mixed forecasts, but hopes of snowfall at Christmas are not off the table.

The pre-Christmas week will not be too boring in terms of weather either. The weather trend for the festive season will initially be kicked off by high pressure system "Fiona", which means that the weather will still be quite relaxed in some areas. But that will soon change. In the meantime, a massive carousel of low pressure around storm depression "Xavi" with its center is moving from the North Atlantic and Iceland to Scandinavia - with consequences as far as Germany.

Over the next few days, clouds will repeatedly spread towards us, along with the risk of storms and subsequent puffs of cold polar air. First in the north, then later in the center and south. As a result, the situation will deteriorate again. From Wednesday, with a falling snow line and increasing winds, which could reach hurricane force in the mountains on Thursday. The forecasts of the weather computers will then diverge more clearly from the start of winter on Friday at the latest.

The European weather model, for example, favors a very stormy and wet and cold approach for Friday with sleet storms and snow showers down to the lowlands. In contrast, the American model shows a milder variant before it gets colder for Christmas. In short: a lot is still possible at the end, but it will be turbulent at the beginning, with a risk of storms and sometimes heavy rain. Here are the details:

Monday night: clouds in the north, partly foggy in the south

The north will continue to be gray and drizzle will fall locally. From the center southwards, however, the sky will be clear or starry in some areas before haze or fog forms in places. Away from the foggy areas, there is a chance of clear skies to catch a glimpse of the fading Geminid shower of shooting stars. However, the motto here is to dress warmly. At least in the south, where there will be light frost. Meanwhile, it will be a milder 4 to 8 degrees in the cloudy and sometimes stormy north.

Monday: Divided start to the week

It will remain gray in the north with occasional drizzle. Otherwise, the fog and high fog will lift during the course of the day and make way for sunshine. Unfortunately, this will not work everywhere - along the lower Danube and in some low mountain valleys it may remain foggy or misty all day. Maximum temperatures: 8 to 11 degrees in the windy north and in the sunny regions, 2 to 6 degrees maximum in persistent fog.

Tuesday: longest spell of fine weather in the south

High "Fiona" will hold out in the south against the impending change in the weather and - apart from the fog - will provide sunshine. From the center northwards, however, it will continue to be cloudy and partly wet. Temperatures will reach 2 to 10 degrees. The south-westerly wind will also be strong to stormy at times over the low mountain ranges.

Wednesday: Falling snow line and risk of storms

Clouds and showers will thunder across the country. The snow line will be between 500 meters in the low mountain ranges and around 1000 meters in the Alps. The wind is a lively to stormy lot. Particularly on the coast with gale-force winds, on the mountains also with heavy gusts of around 100 km/h. All of this at 0 to 3 degrees in the higher elevations and 4 to 8 degrees in the lowlands.

Thursday: Next wave of rain moves through

ntv meteorologist Björn Alexander

Clouds and heavy rain will spread again. It may still snow, especially at first in the higher mountain regions and generally in Bavaria. The wind is also in the race, which will be gale-force in places and reach gale-force in exposed mountain areas. Highs: 2 to 7, in the west up to 9 degrees.

Friday: The start of winter on the calendar brings options for snow

The calculations of the various weather computers vary widely. Some of the trends predict snow showers down to the lowlands with clear single-digit values. The wind would also continue to be a sometimes violent affair. If, on the other hand, the milder variants prevail, then peaks of around or over 10 degrees are conceivable.

Saturday and Christmas Eve: anything is possible

The computer calculations are still far apart. Good chances of snow are therefore offset by much milder temperatures. What is certain, however, is that we will once again remain under the influence of low pressure areas. In other words, it is very likely to remain changeable and windy.
