Wegner on site - Wegner is angry with Kreuzberg District Office
Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner is currently not well-received in the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The fact that the district has now called for the next instance to legally challenge the fence around the Gorlitzer Park and its night-time closure, as demanded by the Senate and specifically by Wegner, annoys him, said the CDU politician at an event of the dialogue series "Kai Wegner on Site" in Prenzlauer Berg.
Wegner pointed out that the situation in the Gorlitzer Park, which is known as a hotspot for crime and drugs, has been difficult for years. "Many people don't dare to walk through this park." He doesn't want such a park for Berlin.
Wegner: I don't want a park for drug dealers
The Senate has adopted a comprehensive package of measures to make the park safer. The fence for around two million Euros is one of them. I want a park to emerge for the people - "and not for drug dealers."
The district Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg announced on Monday that it would not accept the decision of the Berlin Administrative Court in an emergency procedure and would file a complaint with the Berlin-Brandenburg Higher Administrative Court.
The Senate aims to reduce drug crime and clashes with the night-time closure of the park. Critics of the plans argue that drug dealing will only be pushed further onto the streets surrounding the park.
- Despite the district office of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg not being in favor of the fence around Görlitzer Park and its night-time closure, as proposed by Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, the issue continues to be a point of contention in Germany.
- Wegner's stance on the issue is influenced by the park's reputation as a hotspot for drugs and criminality, a situation that he believes affects the safety and comfort of Berlin's residents.
- The Senate, in an effort to improve the situation, has implemented a comprehensive set of measures, including the construction of a fence around the park at a cost of around two million Euros.
- However, the decision to construct the fence has not been met with universal approval in Berlin's Districts, with some, like Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, expressing their intentions to challenge the ruling in higher courts.
- Critics argue that pushing drug activity outside of the park will only lead to further problems in the surrounding districts, potentially exacerbating existing issues of drug crime and criminality in those areas.
- Kai Wegner, in response to these criticisms, has reiterated his desire for a park that is safe for Berlin's residents, free from the influence of drug dealers and criminal elements, stating that "I want a park for the people."
