Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner paid tribute to the courage and conviction of those involved in the failed coup attempt against the Nazi dictatorship 80 years ago. "The courage of the men and women of the 20. July 1944 resistance deserves our deep respect and highest recognition," the CDU politician declared on Friday. "They are an example for us - forever."
On July 20, 1944, Wehrmacht officers around Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg had unsuccessfully attempted to kill NS-Dictator Adolf Hitler with a bomb, overthrow the Nazi regime, and end World War II. Dozens of participants were executed or driven to suicide.
Despite the failure, freedom, law, and human dignity ultimately prevailed, emphasized Wegner. On the 80th anniversary on Saturday, Wegner will participate in the official commemoration, as will Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
