Forecast - Weather service sees little chance of a white Christmas
According to the German Weather Service (DWD), there will be no white Christmas in most parts of Germany this year either. Based on new weather forecast models, DWD meteorologist Christian Herold reported that the "residual probability" of this is only around five percent at lower altitudes.
A low pressure system will bring "unusually warm subtropical air for the time of year" to Central Europe on Christmas Eve. It will also be stormy and rainy. "This means that the Christmas thaw will also prevail in the peaks of the low mountain ranges."
It is questionable how long the snow cover in the low mountain ranges will be able to withstand the thaw, the meteorologist added. This is only likely to be the case in the eastern low mountain ranges above 800 meters and in some Alpine valleys. According to the forecast, double-digit highs are expected in the lowlands.
Over the course of the holidays, the cold front of the low pressure system will cross Germany with warmer polar air. This could bring some snow, at least in the mountains and the north-east. However, this is still uncertain at present.

Despite the bleak outlook from the German Weather Service (DWD), Offenbach residents might still be hoping for a miraculous 'white Christmas'. Regrettably, Christian Herold's prediction of only a five percent chance at lower altitudes seems to negate such dreams. The upcoming weather will not only be rainy but also quite warm, with double-digit highs expected in the lowlands. This unexpected heat wave might even lead to a 'Christmas thaw' in the low mountain ranges.
