State election - Volts supports SPD in campaign

The Volt party will support the SPD during the state election campaign. This was announced in common at a press conference in Dresden on Thursday. "There is a difficult majority in the parliament and we need progressive forces," said Kevin Schellenberg, Saxon state chairman of Volt. His party is not running in the election. Due to the small team, they could not participate as planned, so they looked for ways to still get involved.

Decisive for the decision to support the SPD were, besides content agreements, ultimately the successful cooperation during the previous mayoral election in Dresden. Volt treasurer Kay Schomburg added that they want to participate in campaign stands, poster campaigns, and other events. It's also about public relations work and especially social media, where Volt is very active. Volt also wants to give its voters a recommendation for the SPD in addition to their own.

SPD is pleased with cooperation

"It's great that we can bring a new colorful ball into our campaign with this cooperation," said SPD top candidate Petra Köpping. "For me, Volt stands for optimism, for energy, for positive engagement, for openness, and for constructive solutions." She was happy that "the old aunt SPD" was shaping something with such a young party.

The SPD was approached with the offer of support a few weeks ago, said SPD state chairman Henning Homann. "We have found a good common ground, so that this cooperation can take place." Common goals are the promotion of European positions on Saxon level and the strengthening of progressive forces in the Free State.

SPD and Volt cooperate in some federal states on a communal level, for example, they form joint factions in the city councils of Stuttgart and Munich. At the European election, Volt reached 1.8 percent in Saxony, at the communal elections they managed to enter the city council of Dresden. The state association has 176 members according to Schellenberger. The party joined the Greens' faction in the European Parliament.
