Crime - USA: Man stabs four people and is shot dead

A man in New York is said to have stabbed four people to death with a steak knife, including an eleven-year-old girl and a twelve-year-old boy.

Investigators reported that the man was caught and killed by the police shortly afterwards. The 38-year-old is said to have committed the crimes in the borough of Queens and then set fire to a sofa.

Police received the call from a teenage girl related to the alleged perpetrator, it said. She had called for help and said her cousin was killing family members, the New York Daily News reported.

When the police arrived, the man had punched one investigator in the face and stabbed another between the neck and chest. A 28-year-old police officer then shot him. Both investigators are in hospital and their lives are not in danger.

The crime occurred in the Far Rockaway neighborhood, south of John F. Kennedy Airport - about an hour's drive from downtown Manhattan.
