US-based Apple store staff plan a strike for the first time.

In contrast to other American technology companies, Apple takes great care to ensure that its workforce does not form labor unions or participate in strikes. However, this did not deter employees at an Apple store in Maryland from voting in favor of a strike recently.

In Towson, Maryland, employees at an Apple store feel that their concerns and demands have not been adequately addressed through a year of negotiations with management. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) union, representing these workers, expressed their dissatisfaction with the results. The union is considering a strike, which would be a first for any U.S. Apple store. A follow-up negotiation meeting is scheduled for May 21st.

The union claims that the main issues that prompted this action include work-life balance issues, inconsistent scheduling that disrupts home life, and wages that do not match the region's cost of living.

Apple continues to engage with the union, emphasizing their pride in providing their team members with competitive compensation and excellent benefits. "We value our team members," the company stressed.

Meanwhile, at another Apple store in New Jersey, employees decided against unionizing on Saturday. It's worth noting that last summer, the employees at the Towson store were the first to form a union of Apple store employees. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has received numerous complaints from employees in the past, claiming that Apple tried to discourage them from unionizing. It is a common belief that U.S. technology companies, like Amazon, are often opposed to unions.

Despite Apple's efforts to discourage collective bargaining and strikes among its employees, the situation at the Apple store in Towson, Maryland, continues to escalate. The IAM union, representing the discontented employees, has expressed their intent to follow through with a historic strike, if negotiations on May 21st fail to address their concerns over work-life balance, inconsistent scheduling, and wages not keeping pace with the region's cost of living. Meanwhile, at a different Apple store in New Jersey, employees chose not to unionize recently.
