Two murderers executed in Alabama and Texas
In Alabama, Casey McWhorter is executed for robbery and murder on Thursday. On the same day, convicted murderer David Renteria is also given lethal injection in Texas. This brings the number of executions in the USA this year to 23.
Two convicted murderers have been executed in the USA. According to the authorities, the death sentence against 49-year-old Casey McWhorter was carried out on Thursday in Atmore prison in the US state of Alabama. According to reports, 53-year-old David Renteria was executed on the same day in Huntsville, Texas. Both died by lethal injection.
McWhorter had been convicted of a murder in 1993 - he had just turned 18 at the time of the crime. The victim had been shot during a robbery. McWhorter's accomplices, one of whom was the son of the murdered man, were 15 and 16 years old and were spared the death penalty because of their age. Renteria had been found guilty of the murder of a five-year-old girl in 2001.
In court, Renteria testified that he had been forced by gang members to dispose of the girl's body. However, he denied having murdered her. In his final words, Renteria asked the child's relatives for forgiveness, according to the Texas Department of Justice. In Texas alone, eight death sentences have been carried out this year. In the USA as a whole, 23 executions have been carried out in Alabama, Florida, Missouri and Oklahoma in addition to Texas.
The execution of Casey McWhorter and David Renteria marked the 23rd instance of capital punishment in the USA this year, with Alabama and Texas accounting for two of these executions. Internationalhumanrights organizations have criticized the application of the death penalty, particularly in cases of murder and manslaughter like these two. Despite facing opposition, the USA continues to uphold the death penalty as an enforceable form of justice. In Texas, where Renteria was executed, eight executions have taken place in 2023, contributing to the nationwide total.
