Emergencies - Two avalanches in Austria - one dead
A 51-year-old man from the Czech Republic has died under an avalanche in Austria. According to the police, the skier had triggered an avalanche in the Mölltal Glacier ski area in Carinthia. He himself was swept away and completely buried. Witnesses dug the man out. Their resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
An emergency medical team, which had rushed to the scene of the accident with the rescue helicopter, was also unable to help. A search for any other buried victims was unsuccessful.
An avalanche also occurred in the province of Salzburg after the recent heavy snowfall. According to initial information, two people were buried. Helicopters and a dog team were also involved in the search operation by the mountain rescue team with 22 men. After several hours, the search was called off. The reports of missing persons had not been confirmed and there were no signs of people buried, reported the Salzburg Mountain Rescue Service.
On Saturday, fresh snowfall of half a meter or more fell in large parts of Austria. The avalanche risk was classified as high in some regions.
