Elbe River Water Filter - Tornado sweeps over Schleswig-Holstein, land and water

A Tornado pulled over the Elbe river and onto the land at Brokdorf in Schleswig-Holstein on Tuesday evening. "The tornado really did occur. It sucked up water from the Elbe and then struck between Brokstedt and Glückstadt," said a spokesperson for the German Fire Department to the German Press Agency. However, the tornado disintegrated itself more or less directly and caused no damages as a result. The weather in the region caused no major damages otherwise. The Fire Department was called to around 40 incidents. Primarily, streets were flooded and cellars were filled.

The German Weather Service confirmed in the morning that it was indeed a tornado. "That's clear. In the image, you can see a beautiful, condensed vortex cloud that reaches to the ground. And that's exactly the definition," said meteorologist Christian Herold, who belongs to the Tornado Expert Group at the DWD. The turbulence on the ground is a necessary condition to turn a cloud vortex into a real tornado. "If something is whirled up there - like, for example, water - then that is an undeniable case."

According to Herold, around 40 tornados are registered in a year. In this year, 20 tornados have been confirmed and around 100 suspected cases reported.

  1. Despite the tornado in Brokdorf, the weather in Lower Saxony didn't cause significant damages beyond the Fire Department's interference with 40 incidents, primarily involving flooded streets and filled cellars.
  2. The Fire Department in Hamburg also received reports of incidents related to the weather, but it remains unclear if they were linked to the tornado in Schleswig-Holstein.
  3. Interestingly, the weather in Luckenwalde, located in the state of Brandenburg, also experienced turbulence, but it was not classified as a tornado by the German Weather Service.
  4. The Tornado Expert Group at the DWD, led by meteorologist Christian Herold, stated that the weather conditions in Brokstedt and Glückstadt were conducive for a tornado, leading to the water being sucked up and the eventual formation.
  5. The German Weather Service in Brokstedt issued a strong wind warning before the tornado hit, advising residents to take necessary precautions, but it did not predict an actual tornado event.
  6. The German Press Agency reported that the weather in Brokdorf remains unstable, prompting the Fire Department to continue monitoring the situation and advise residents to stay indoors as a precaution, especially given the history of tornadoes in the region.
