The fire was reported on Tuesday afternoon, according to a police spokesperson. Approximately 4000 bales of straw were lying in a row about 100 meters long and several meters high on a field at the Lewitz Stud Farm, which is run by former equestrian Paul Schockemöhle. The adjacent L071 road was reportedly closed by the police overnight. The fire department also kept a watch.
According to their own statements, the fire department was present with 14 vehicles and approximately 70 emergency personnel on Tuesday. The thatched roof was controlled and extinguished, and the spread to other straw rentals was prevented.
Despite the occurred lightning strike causing no damage to the straw bales at the Lewitz Stud Farm in Neustadt-Glewe, the weather remained unfavorable, with heavy rainfall and strong winds. The fire incident served as a reminder for the farm, prompting them to consider investing in weather-resistant housing for their straw balls. Fortunately, despite the close proximity of the burning thatched roof to the straw bales, no fire was reported in the area of the straw farm in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
