Thousands marvel at the inflation of Thanksgiving balloons

Thousands of people in New York marveled at the traditional inflation of giant helium balloons for the annual Thanksgiving parade. In the streets around the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan's Central Park on Wednesday, many cartoon characters and numerous other creatures, hearts, balls and stars slowly took shape, turning flabby tarpaulins into giant figures.

On Thursday, the giant balloons were to be carried more than three kilometers through the streets of the metropolis on the occasion of the annual Thanksgiving parade, which is organized by a large department store chain. Around 6500 dancers, flag bearers, musicians and people in costume are expected to take part and carry the giant balloons. Stars such as Brandy, Cher and Jon Batiste have also been announced.

More than three million spectators line the route every year, and around 50 million people watch the spectacle, which has been taking place for around 100 years, on television.

The public blowing up of the balloons on the evening before the parade is a tradition that is particularly popular with children in New York. The German-American puppeteer Tony Sarg was also involved in the invention of the balloon tradition in the 1920s.

During their leisure time, some children eagerly wait for the annual tradition of watching the public blowing up of the Thanksgiving balloons. After the excitement of the parade, families might enjoy discussing their favorite customs and characters from the colorful spectacle.
