A 34-year-old motorcyclist died of his severe injuries on Tuesday evening, which he had sustained in an accident on the A24 at Suckow (Ludwigslust-Parchim district) the day before. With this, 47 people have died on the roads in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since the beginning of the year, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry.
In the entire previous year, there had been 57 traffic fatalities in the northeast. This was the lowest recorded number. Compared to the other federal states, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern had the largest decline of 31 percent. In total, the number of people killed in traffic accidents in Germany in 2023 increased slightly.
In the first half of 2023, 27 people died in traffic accidents in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to the Interior Ministry, 39 people died on the roads of the state in the same period of this year. That was 12 or 44 percent more. In this time frame, there was still a decline of 23 percent compared to the previous year.
According to the preliminary statistics, the number of seriously injured people in the first half of 2024 decreased by 3.6 percent to 504. The number of lightly injured people fell slightly to 2,426. The Interior Ministry further stated that the police in the first six months of the year recorded 25,947 traffic accidents. That was 1.3 percent fewer than in the previous year's period.
