Danger of terror - The Minister is demanding more powers for security agencies
With reference to the worsened security situation in Germany, Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) has called for stricter laws in the field of internal security. "In light of the current threats from international terrorism and the dangers from espionage, sabotage and disinformation from abroad, our security agencies cannot be neglected", he urged after a meeting with the top police and constitutional protection officials in Wiesbaden.
Legal foundations must be quickly created to effectively counter new threats, explained the Minister. "So far, federal politics has been acting too cautiously on these central issues." Poseck demanded, among other things, to examine whether stricter penalties for espionage activities should be given.
Furthermore, police officers from both the federal and state governments should be given tools to effectively analyze data. The Minister also advocated for constitutionally sound solutions for combating encrypted communication from criminals that can be used by security agencies throughout Europe in the Darknet.
It is very likely that the threats will rather increase than decrease, warned Poseck. It is striking that Germany has had to rely on the information of foreign states to prevent terrorist attacks and other assaults time and again. "Our intelligence services are always playing catch-up to foreign intelligence services", criticized Poseck. However, security should not be impeded by data protection.
