Manglement in the administration - The mayor of Sylt must arrange for a recall procedure

The Sylt mayor must face a recall procedure. At the evening meeting in the town hall of Westerland, 26 community representatives voted in favor of the corresponding application. With this, the necessary two-thirds majority was reached, with which the procedure for recalling Haëckels began. He has been sick-listed since February. The factions - with the exception of the SSW - had submitted a corresponding application at the end of June, according to a spokesperson for the Sylt community.

"The recall is not about the person, but about serious deficiencies in the administration", read a statement from the factions. The "unsatisfactory state of affairs is largely Haëckel's responsibility".

Haëckel himself did not attend the meeting in the evening - his lawyer represented him. "He is unfit for duty, the district doctor has determined - there is no doubt about his unfitness for duty", said Haëckel's lawyer, Trutz Graf Kerssenbrock. The allegations against his client were unfounded, and the proceedings were unfounded.

The citizens of the Sylt community will then decide on the recall on September 29, 2024. It became known at the end of June that the permanent mayor wanted to return to the chief seat in the town hall in Westerland despite his illness. Haëckel has been managing the administration on the North Sea island since 2015. He is currently represented by his deputy, Carsten Kerkamm (CDU).

  1. Nikolas Häckel's recall procedure initiated in Westerland's town hall was backed by 26 Sylt commune representatives.
  2. The factional statement regarding the recall mentioned serious administrative deficiencies, largely attributed to Haëckel's personal responsibility.
  3. Despite his illness, Häckel expressed his intent to return as permanent mayor of Westerland during a June statement, managing the administration on Sylt since 2015.
  4. The selection procedure for a potential replacement for Häckel, if the recall is successful, would fall under the jurisdiction of Schleswig-Holstein's administration.
