Health - The DRK asks people before going on vacation to donate blood

The German Red Cross (DRK) asks people in Berlin to donate blood before going on vacation. With a blood donation, one can contribute to ensuring that patient care with blood preparations is always guaranteed in summer and holiday seasons, as the DRK announced. Every day during the summer season, one can donate blood at various locations in Berlin.

Approximately half of all preparations are needed for the treatment of cancer patients and patients, as stated. However, blood donations are also urgently needed during major surgeries, medical emergencies, and during chronic illnesses.

Who can donate?

Healthy people aged 18 and above can donate blood. A doctor or a nurse checks the suitability for donation in a preliminary examination. Men can donate up to six times a year, women up to four times a year, according to the DRK. There should be at least eight weeks between two donations. As long as donors drink enough, avoid prolonged sun exposure and physical exertion, and take a rest period of at least 10 to 15 minutes after donation, donating blood is also possible during heat, according to the DRK.

Despite the summer's heat, visiting a Berlin clinic for blood donation is still crucial, as many treatments, including those for cancer patients, rely on a steady supply of blood preparations. Due to the darkness of certain diseases and the critical need for blood donations, the German Red Cross in Berlin encourages healthy individuals to donate regularly.
