Infrastructure - The bridge construction in Weißenfels is being delayed further
The construction of the Great Saale Bridge in Weissenfels is being delayed again. The reason for this, according to the city, is that the project plans need to be expanded. The new plans are said to provide a wider bridge to create a bike lane separated from the pedestrian area. Originally, construction was supposed to begin this year, but it is now planned for 2029.
A one-year delay was already announced in the previous September because the common German magpie was nesting in the bridge pillars and are protected by wildlife conservation laws. According to current estimates, costs of around 18 million Euros are expected for the bridge reconstruction.
The mayor of Weissenfels, Martin Papke, reacted with disbelief: "I am pissed off." Years of planning for bike lanes and pedestrian paths is unacceptable to him.
- The delay in the construction of the Great Saale Bridge in Weissenfels might affect the overall infrastructure development in Saxony-Anhalt, potentially impacting traffic flow through the region.
- The new build of the expanded bridge, which includes a separate bike lane, will require substantial changes to the existing traffic patterns and pedestrian routes around Bridges in Weissenfels.
- The completion of the new Great Saale Bridge in 2029 is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and safety, with the inclusion of a bike lane contributing to the region's overall sustainable transportation infrastructure in Saxony-Anhalt.
