The Blussus-Stein in Mainz is being restored

The 'Blussus-Stone' is the most famous Roman gravestone in the collections of the Landesmuseum in Mainz: Now it is being cleared of dirt - watching is explicitly permitted.

The laser device is in the restorer's hand, then a yellow line appears on the stone plate, in the end the surface looks a little cleaner: The restoration of the "Blussus-Stone" has begun at the Mainz State Museum. This is a grave stone from the Roman era. The stone depicts the oldest Roman ship representation north of the Alps and is the most famous Roman grave stone in the collections of the Mainz State Museum. It was discovered in Mainz-Weisenau in 1848.

Archaeologists from Mainz and Glasgow involved

The stone will be cleaned with the help of a laser within a week. Matthias Steyer, who has already restored the Great Mainz Jupiter Column, conducts the work. At the same time, archaeologists from the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the University of Glasgow analyze the limestone for color pigments. With microscopic images, it can be seen in which colors the grave stone was originally painted.

The restoration costs approximately 5,000 Euro. These costs are mainly covered by the Friends of the Mainz State Museum association. Visitors have the opportunity to observe the restorers in the stone hall of the Mainz State Museum until Friday.

The Blussus-Stone, with its depiction of the oldest Roman ship representation north of the Rhineland-Palatinate's Alps, is currently under restoration at a Museum in Mainz. The restoration process includes the use of a laser device on a slab of stone, helping to reveal the original history and colors of the grave stone. After completion, this significant piece will be displayed at a Restaurant in Mainz, offering visitors a chance to appreciate its historical value.
