Sylt - Sylter representatives discussing chief positions in the town hall
The representatives of Sylt community are discussing today about a possible recall procedure against Mayor Nikolas Häckel (independent). He has been sick-listed since February. In the session, the local politicians will discuss this evening about a corresponding joint motion of the factions except for SSW, a spokesperson for the Sylt community announced.
People will decide on recall
If the motion obtains the necessary two-thirds majority, the recall process against Häckel will begin. The people of the Sylt community will then decide on the recall itself, as the spokesperson further stated. The possible recall procedure is to be considered independently of the review on duty negligence by the Community Council of Sylt, he added.
It became known at the end of June that Häckel wanted to return to his office chair at the town hall in Westerland, despite being sick. Previous statements by the community spokesperson indicate that Häckel wrote to the Community Council requesting a phased re-integration from 1. July. However, the members of the Community Council could not comply with this wish as no medical assessment had been submitted yet.
Doctor to assess duty status of the Mayor
The committee decided at the end of May to initiate a medical examination of the 50-year-old and to determine his pension benefits in case of early retirement. Häckel has been managing the administration on the North Sea island since 2015. He is currently represented by his deputy, Carsten Kerkamm (CDU).
The withdrawal procedure against Mayor Nikolas Häckel involves the involvement of personal data, as discussed by the representatives of the Sylt commune. If the recall process against Häckel proceeds, it will be the residents of Westerland on Sylt who will ultimately decide on the recall. The medical assessment of Häckel's duty status is being handled by a committee in Schleswig-Holstein.
