Waters are loaded - Swimming prohibition in Lake Rothenklempenow due to Fecal bacteria

For the Haussee in Rothenklempenow (Vorpommern-Greifswald district), the authorities have imposed a swimming ban. The reason is a noticeable faecal contamination of the water, as a spokesperson stated. A health hazard can arise from the bacterial contamination. The swimming ban applies indefinitely, the situation will be monitored regularly. The cause of the contamination, according to the spokesperson, is still unclear.

The Haussee is a shallow lake - its average depth, according to authorities, is only 1.90 meters. It is therefore mainly surrounded by meadows and fields. According to a water quality information from the state government, the water quality can be affected by runoff water from agricultural areas during heavy rain. The spokesperson explained that birds could also contaminate the water.

Despite the swimming ban in Greifswald's Haussee due to bacterial contamination, residents of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's District Vorpommern-Greifswald still frequents other nearby water bodies for swimming. This has led to overcrowding and potential health risks in these alternative water bodies. Unfortunately, the popular swimming spot in Greifswald, the Haussee, has seen its reputation tarnished, with swimming prohibited indefinitely to ensure public health safety.
