Blue-green algae - Swimming ban at the pond in Pfaffenhofen

Due to Blue-green algae in the Ebenhausen Lake in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, the health department has banned swimming. Swimming in the children's section of the lake has not been possible for a week now. According to the district office, the Blue-green algae have "massively" multiplied and other algae species have spread.

According to the health department, there is a health risk if water is swallowed or inhaled. Children are particularly at risk. Blue-green algae - the technical term is Cyanobacteria - can multiply strongly in summer temperatures and produce toxic substances. They can cause allergic reactions, but also fever and respiratory diseases.

The Ebenhausen Lake, situated in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, which is part of Upper Bavaria, has been affected by an outbreak of Blue-green algae. Despite being known as a popular leisure spot, the Health Office has issued a no swimming advisory due to the presence of these algae. The advisory extends to the children's section of the lake, where children are often seen enjoying their time.
