Stricter rules apply to three major porn portals
Large porn portals repeatedly end up in lists of the world's most used websites. This means that three of them are now subject to rules that the European Commission has already imposed on Google, Facebook and X, for example.
Three internet companies with adult content - Pornhub, Stripchat and XVideos - will be subject to stricter rules in future, according to the European Union. The EU Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, Thierry Breton, explained that the companies' high number of users meant that they met the threshold to fall under the stricter so-called #DSA obligations. The new rules under the Digital Services Act (DSA) require companies to take measures to prevent illegal content or the spread of disinformation, among other things. "Creating a safer online environment for our children is a high priority of the DSA," emphasized Breton.
In April, the EU Commission imposed the new rules on 19 companies, including Alphabet subsidiaries, meta platforms, Microsoft companies, as well as X and Alibaba. They must do more to combat disinformation, offer users more protection and choice and ensure greater protection for children. Otherwise, they risk fines of up to six percent of their global turnover.
While the user numbers of the major technology companies exceeded the threshold of 45 million required for designation as very large online platforms (VLOP), Pornhub, based in Canada, reported 33 million average monthly users on July 31, falling short of the required figure. However, the designation could be based not only on the user numbers reported by the company, but also on information from third parties or alternative sources, a senior EU Commission official said. The EU Commission's stricter rules, originally imposed on tech giants like Google and Facebook, will now also apply to the International pornography sites Pornhub, Stripchat, and XVideos. These platforms, due to their high number of users, now fall under the stricter obligations outlined in the Digital Services Act (DSA), which aims to create a safer online environment, particularly for children.
