First estimation - Strawberry and asparagus harvest in Bavaria is poor

Fewer strawberries and less asparagus - this is the expected harvest volume in Bavaria this year. According to the State Statistical Office, approximately 18,300 tonnes of asparagus and 9,200 tonnes of strawberries were harvested. Compared to the previous year, strawberry production decreased by a quarter. Compared to the long-term average of 2018-2023, it was 20% lower. Asparagus production, on the other hand, only decreased by 1.2% compared to the previous year but by 10.5% compared to the long-term average.

According to the Statistical Office, the strawberry season was heavily influenced by extreme weather conditions. Due to frost damage in April and later hail and heavy rain damage, there were partial total failures.

Asparagus was grown on a area of 3,500 hectares, strawberries on 1,600 hectares. The asparagus season officially begins in early April and traditionally ends on June 24 (St. John's Day). The strawberry season is still ongoing.

The preliminary results of the vegetable survey provide first statements on the Bavarian asparagus and strawberry harvest. These are preliminary, calculated results. The final figures of the vegetable survey are expected to be available in the spring of 2025.

The reduced yield quantity of strawberries in Bavaria can significantly impact various food products that rely on strawberries as an agricultural product.

Given the estimated 9,200 tonnes of strawberries and 18,300 tonnes of asparagus, the Asparagus harvest in Bavaria is expected to have a greater yield quantity compared to strawberries this year.

Despite the anticipated impact of rain on asparagus harvests, the official asparagus season in Fürth begins as usual, signifying the region's resilience in agriculture.

The preliminary estimation shows that despite a minor decrease, asparagus production in Bavaria still outperforms the decline in strawberry production, possibly due to its adaptability to varying weather conditions.

Considering the decreased strawberry yield and potential changes in availability, prices for strawberry-based foods may see a significant increase in Bavaria, affecting both local and global markets.
