Household - Special session in the summer - Landtag discusses supplementary budget

The Brandenburg State Parliament comes together today for a Special Session, despite the summer break. The legislators will discuss the supplementary budget of the red-black-green State Government in Brandenburg to secure the Brandenburg-Aid package worth around 850 million Euro for mitigating the consequences of the Ukraine War.

The Constitutional Court had declared the regulation for the 2022 aid package unconstitutional on a complaint from the AfD State Parliamentary Faction. The Court demands more explanations regarding the connection between aid and new debts due to a declared state of emergency.

With these measures, families, hospitals, businesses, and municipalities are intended to be relieved. According to the will of the red-black-green Coalition, these aids should no longer be financed through debts but from the state's reserves. This would avoid the necessity of declaring a new state of emergency and providing better explanations for the measures.

The opposition from AfD, The Left, and the Free Voters sees this very critically. Another Special Session is expected to take place about a week later for the second and final third reading.

  1. The AfD State Parliamentary Faction, dissatisfied with the decision, lodged a complaint against the regulation of the 2022 aid package with the Constitutional Court.
  2. Despite the objections raised by opposition parties such as the AfD, The Left, and the Free Voters, the State Government in Brandenburg intends to present the supplementary budget during the Special Session.
  3. The Constitutional Court, in its ruling, urged the state parliament to provide clearer justifications for the aid package and its potential impact on the state's budget and constitutional law.
  4. The expected Special Session in Brandenburg's State Parliament aims to address the Constitutional Court's recommendations and establish the conditions for financing the help package without incurring more debts.
  5. The state parliament in Potsdam resumes its sessions after the summer break to tackle the contentious Supplementary Budget, aiming to uphold the Constitution (law) while providing aid to households and essential services affected by the Ukraine crisis.
  6. Regardless of the challenges and disagreements, the State Government in Brandenburg remains determined to finalize the budget and pass the Help Package before the legislature enters its summer recess again.
