Parties - SPD-Deputy Gava does not support the constituency for Pistorius
Osnabrück SPD MP Manuel Gava will not give up his constituency for Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. "I have secured the direct mandate and I want to run again," he said in the "Berlin Playbook Podcast" of the news magazine "Politico" (Thursday). As a sitting Bundestag MP, one has the preference right. "But anyone else can also run against me," Gava added. The fact that he wants to run in Osnabrück is set, according to Gava.
However, Osnabrück is also the hometown of Pistorius, who was mayor there from 2006 to 2013. He recently told the "Rheinische Post" and the "General-Anzeiger" that he had not yet decided whether he would run for the Bundestag in 2025. He would announce it after the summer break.
Pistorius has been Defense Minister since 2023 and the successor of Christine Lambrecht. Before that, he was Interior Minister in Lower Saxony - and therefore without a Bundestag mandate in the cabinet.
Looking for another constituency is not an option for Gava. "Alternatives are for everyone, not just for me," said the 33-year-old. At the same time, Gava emphasized with a look at Pistorius: "He is a super Defense Minister." And he would also be a good MP, according to Gava.
- Despite being from the same electoral district, Electoral district of Osnabrück in Germany, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has not yet decided if he will run for the Bundestag in 2025.
- The SPD party in the Federal Parliament currently has two representatives from Osnabrück, including incumbent MP Manuel Gava, who refuses to give up his seat for Pistorius.
- Prior to his role as Defense Minister, Pistorius served as Interior Minister in the state of Lower Saxony, a position that did not require him to hold a Bundestag mandate.
- Gava expressed respect for Pistorius's role as Defense Minister and even praised his potential as an MP, but he has no intention of looking for an alternative constituency, as alternatives are for everyone.
