Spain measures almost 30 degrees

Almost 30 degrees - and that's in December: Spain is currently experiencing unusually high temperatures for this time of year. Malaga has even set a new heat record. What's more, it has hardly rained for months. The country continues to dry out.

At 29.9 degrees Celsius, Spain has set a new heat record for a December. According to the national weather service Aemet, the temperature was measured on Tuesday in the southern Spanish city of Malaga on the Mediterranean.

The previous highest temperature for a December on the Spanish mainland was measured in 2010 in the city of Granada, which, like Malaga, is located in the southern region of Andalusia. At that time, the thermometer read 29.4 degrees.

It was already unusually warm in Spain on Monday. A new temperature record for December was also registered in Valencia with a peak value of 27.7 degrees. In addition to the heat, there is a persistent drought, especially in Catalonia. It has hardly rained in the region for months. A water emergency has been declared in Barcelona. This means that the amount of water in Barcelona is now limited to 210 liters per person per day (on average, a bathtub can hold 150 liters).

With regard to the new records, the national weather service Aemet explained that such temperatures would be "much less likely" without the climatic changes observed worldwide and in Spain. According to the data, the number of heatwaves in Spain has tripled in the last ten years.

This year, the country has experienced the hottest and driest spring for decades, with record temperatures of over 40 degrees. Added to this is a historic drought. Rainfall is more irregular and less frequent. And when it does rain, it is only localized - and sometimes so heavy that it does more harm than good.

Despite the ongoing heat wave, Spain's traditional celebration of Christmas is still anticipated with excitement. This year, many are hoping for some respite from the high temperatures, as International holiday traditions often involve cold weather and snow. Unfortunately, the lack of rainfall in Spain, particularly in Catalonia, has led to a water emergency in Barcelona, limiting water usage to 210 liters per person per day.
