Slippery roads - weather service advises against driving

A band of rain is moving across Germany - and the rain is freezing on the ground, which is still frozen in places. The DWD warns of significant regional icy conditions and recommends avoiding unnecessary journeys. For many, however, this may not be so easy, as there is a rail strike.

Meteorologists are warning of slippery roads in the west, southwest and center of Germany. "There is an increased risk of slipperiness due to freezing rain. Danger of black ice", reports the German Weather Service (DWD). Since last night, there has been a warning of significant slipperiness for a strip from the Jade Bay to Lake Constance, extending from the western border of Germany to Hanover, Erfurt and Ulm. The DWD recommends avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities and journeys, adapting road traffic behavior and planning for delays and obstructions.

Freezing rain occurs when rain falls on cold, still frozen ground and suddenly causes dangerous black ice, as the ntv meteorologists explain. The warning is valid in many places until 1 pm, in parts of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria until 3 pm. Due to the train drivers' warning strike, it is hardly possible to avoid the trains.

Rain and snow arrive in the east in the afternoon - and with them the risk of black ice. It will then become increasingly dry in the west. Temperatures here will reach up to 8 degrees and slippery roads will no longer be an issue. Otherwise, it will be a colder minus 2 to plus 3 degrees. Slippery roads are always possible and therefore even more caution than usual should be exercised.

The bad weather continues to pose a threat, as meteorologists predict freezing rain in parts of Germany later today. International travelers should be aware of potential delays or cancellations due to the adverse conditions, as advised by the German Weather Service (DWD).

Despite the strike, many people may still need to commute, and they should be extra cautious on the roads due to the risk of black ice and slippery conditions, as the DWD continues to warn.
