Weather - Situation on Bavaria's roads eases - train services disrupted

Despite the continuing wintry weather, the situation on the roads in southern Bavaria calmed down during the night. The authorities only reported minor accidents; there were no serious injuries or fatalities.

"A few trees still fell, but there were only accidents with minor damage", said a spokesperson for the police headquarters of Upper Bavaria South. According to a spokesperson, the number of accidents in Lower Bavaria was also "typical for the time of year". The night was similarly quiet on the roads in northern Upper Bavaria and Swabia, according to the respective police headquarters.

Not only Bavaria was affected by the winter weather. There were also weather-related problems on the roads in some areas of northern Germany. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a car left a snow-covered road and crashed into a tree. The two occupants were seriously injured in the accident.

Train services and air traffic still disrupted

Despite the more relaxed traffic situation in Bavaria, there were still no trains running at Munich Central Station in the early morning. A spokesman said that Deutsche Bahn would announce in the morning when operations would resume. Munich Airport has also not yet announced whether it will reopen as planned. As planned, the airport had initially suspended flight operations until 6 a.m. due to the weather conditions.

Further fresh snow is not expected in large parts of Bavaria on Sunday for the time being. According to the German Weather Service, only isolated flakes are expected to fall. Only in the eastern low mountain ranges and in the Alps are several centimetres of fresh snow expected. There are also snow drifts or a considerable risk of avalanches in the ridges. Meteorologists are expecting lows of minus 6 to minus 9 degrees. South of the Danube, temperatures could reach minus 10 to minus 15 degrees in some areas. It will continue to be cold on Monday and Tuesday, but snow is only expected to fall sporadically.

Weather situation eases

The situation will be similar in some parts of Germany in the coming days. In Lower Saxony, on the North Sea coast and between the Ore Mountains and the Harz Mountains, occasional snowfall is expected today. On Monday, the flakes should slowly turn into raindrops. In contrast, it should stay dry from Berlin to southern Bavaria. Rain is also expected to continue in the west and southwest on Tuesday. The weather service is also expecting black ice here.

On Saturday, the winter weather paralyzed parts of Bavaria. Snow and black ice caused accidents and long traffic jams on the highways, and Munich and Memmingen airports temporarily suspended flight operations. There were no trains on numerous rail routes and travelers had to spend the night in trains in Ulm and Munich on Saturday night. The Bundesliga home match between FC Bayern Munich and 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon was also canceled.

The easing of the weather situation in southern Bavaria was also observed in northern Upper Bavaria and Swabia, with minimal accidents reported. Despite the improvements, train services in Munich Central Station remained disrupted, with Deutsche Bahn announcing a resumption of operations later in the day.

In contrast, Lower Bavaria reported a typical number of accidents for the season, while Upper Bavaria South saw a few minor incidents with tree falls. Meanwhile, a serious car accident occurred in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, causing injuries to the vehicle's occupants.

Germany's railroads and air traffic were not spared from the impact of the wintry weather. Munich Airport, initially scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m., was yet to make a decision on resuming operations. Similarly, there were no trains running at Munich Central Station in the early morning.

The German Weather Service (DWD) forecasted low temperatures in southern Bavaria and isolated snow flakes in the Alps, with potential avalanche risks. Conversely, parts of Lower Saxony, between the Ore Mountains and the Harz Mountains, and the North Sea coast are expected to face occasional snowfall over the coming days.

Last weekend, Bavaria suffered from winter weather, resulting in numerous accidents, traffic jams, and flight cancellations at Munich and Memmingen airports. Train services were also affected, causing delays and cancellations on numerous rail routes. Moreover, football matches, including Bayern Munich's home game against 1. FC Union Berlin, were postponed or canceled due to the weather conditions.
