Basketball-Trainer - Shortly before Olympics: Herbert-switch to FC Bayern confirmed
World champion trainer Gordon Herbert will switch from his role as national trainer for the FC Bayern basketball team after the Olympics, where he coached the German team in Lille and Paris. The Munich club announced this right before the start of the Olympics.
"Gordon Herbert was our top choice as new trainer for FC Bayern Basketball and we are very happy that we were able to win him over. We are convinced that we will achieve our ambitious goals with him", quoted club president Herbert Hainer in the statement. The 65-year-old Canadian receives a contract with German champion FC Bayern until summer 2026.
"One of the biggest sports brands in the world"
The Bayern had already released a statement a few hours earlier, but then withdrew it. "I am very honored to become the coach of a club like Bayern Munchen, one of the biggest and best-organized sports brands in the world. We will have a very competitive team, which fans can rely on and be proud of", said Herbert. Everything will be "very well prepared".
Herbert follows Pablo Laso at FC Bayern, who surprisingly left the Bundesliga market leader after winning the double and joined Spanish first division team Baskonia. In the past few weeks, the trainer had denied any contact with the Munich team and complained that he had not received an offer to coach the Bayern footballers.
No transition period
The rule that national trainers can only take over a BBL club three months later is reportedly being changed at short notice by the league. Herbert can therefore start directly as head coach and does not need a transition period.
For the Canadian, this summer marks the end of his three-year tenure with the German Basketball Federation. In the summer of 2022, his team, captained by Dennis Schroeder, won bronze at the EM in their home country. In 2023, Schroeder and Co. surprisingly won gold at the World Championship in Asia with the final round in Manila and defeated the star team of the USA.
