Las Vegas - Shooter at US university had applied for jobs in vain
The suspected shooter in the deadly attack at a university in the US city of Las Vegas had previously applied unsuccessfully for a job at several universities, according to police. "We are still learning a lot about this suspect and still trying to understand his motive," said Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Police Department.
"We know he applied many times to multiple colleges in Nevada and was rejected each time." He was a 67-year-old man. Police officers shot the shooter at the scene. The man had previously killed three people. According to the police, all of the victims were university lecturers. Another lecturer was injured and is still being treated in hospital.
Las Vegas is located in the US state of Nevada and is known for its casinos. McMahill said the suspect had a list of people he was looking for on the university campus, as well as lecturers at another college. "We also know the suspect was in financial trouble." During a search of his apartment, investigators found an eviction order on the front door. A kind of will had also been left there.
Students were apparently not the target of the attack
The morning before the attack, the man had visited a post office and sent 22 letters without return addresses to various university employees across the country, McMahill continued. "The first letter we opened contained an unknown white powder substance." The envelopes are still being investigated, he said. The sheriff urged caution in case other education employees received letters without return addresses.
McMahill said the shooter fired a handgun and brought 11 magazines to the scene. He had acquired the weapon legally in 2022. The university emphasized that students at the university were not the target of the attack.
In the USA, rampages and fatal shootings are sadly part of everyday life. Firearms are readily available there and in circulation on a massive scale. Deadly attacks with many victims regularly shake the country - for example in schools, supermarkets, nightclubs or at large events. Calls for stricter gun laws regularly come to nothing.
