Shark kills woman on vacation in the Bahamas

Shark attacks are actually rare in the Bahamas. After a German vacationer was attacked while diving at the end of November and has been missing ever since, a shark attacks a tourist again. Despite resuscitation attempts, the American woman dies from her serious injuries.

A US tourist has been killed by a shark in the Bahamas. The 44-year-old from Boston in the US state of Massachusetts was on a stand-up paddleboard off the coast of a seaside resort on the island of New Providence near her hotel, the police said. "The victim suffered a serious injury to the right side of his body." The incident was first reported by local media such as the online newspaper "The Tribune242".

The attack occurred less than 1.6 kilometers off the west coast of the Caribbean state's most populous island, according to the police. A lifeguard pulled the woman and a male relative out of the water in a speedboat and brought them back to shore, police said.

Despite attempts at resuscitation, emergency personnel had to pronounce the woman, who was seriously injured on the right side of her body, dead. The woman's male companion was not injured. It is unclear which species of shark attacked the woman, who is said to have been in her early to mid-40s.

A jet ski rental company witnessed the shark attack. He saw the couple go into the water laughing and talking. As he reported to the newspaper "The Nassau Guardian", he was able to observe from the beach how the shark pulled the paddle board under water. The shark is said to have been in the area for several minutes. According to him, the woman had only gotten married the day before. However, the police did not want to confirm this statement.

Shark attacks are rare

It was only at the end of November that a 47-year-old German woman was reported missing after a shark attack during a diving trip near the island of Grand Bahama, according to local media. The search for her continues, according to The Nassau Guardian.

Tourism is an important economic sector in the 3,000-island Bahamas. However, a database of shark attacks compiled by the Florida Museum of Natural History recorded 89 such incidents worldwide last year. According to the database, 33 unprovoked shark attacks have been recorded in the Bahamas. In 2019, a US tourist was killed by a shark while snorkeling.
