Handball - SG Flensburg-Handewitt starts into the new season

Without any Olympic team members, Handball Bundesligist SG Flensburg-Handewitt has started its preparation for the new season. Coach Nicolej Krickau asked the rest team, which has been reinforced by six youth players, to first undergo a lactate test on a sports field in Glücksburg.

"We're glad that the long holidays are finally over," said the 37-year-old with a smirk. In the previous Bundesliga season, the three-time German champion finished third and celebrated a win in the European League. "We believe we're better than last season. Five, six other teams also have the same goal," said Krickau.

Almost the entire team for Olympia

Emil Jakobsen, newcomer Niclas Kirkeloekke from Rhein-Neckar Loewen and Simon Pytlick are in the 14-man squad for the Danes. Kevin Moeller and Lukas Joergensen are on the reserve list for the World Champion. In addition, Jim Gottfridsson (Sweden), Blaz Blagotinsek (Slovenia), and German national team captain Johannes Golla in Paris are part of the team.

These players will rejoin training on August 14th. Krickau: "There's only little time left until the season starts to learn new things." It's good that there's only one entry for left-handed Kirkeloekke. Patrick Volz (previously HBW Balingen-Weilstetten) has been loaned to Sonderjske HB as a cooperation partner. Flensburg plays the first test match against the Danes on August 2nd.

Kay Smits, almost a new signing

Almost like a new signing is also Kay Smits to be seen. The Dutchman missed most of the previous season due to a heart muscle injury. Through Smits and Niclas Kirkeloekke, coach Krickau has new options in the right back position.

The Bundesliga season begins with a home game on September 6th (8:00 PM/Dyn) against HC Erlangen. The match against TVB Stuttgart follows on September 15th. The next North Clasico is also scheduled. The 111th Schleswig-Holstein Derby against record champions THW Kiel takes place on November 17th against the local rival.
