Senior steals 83-year-old's walking aid

An 83-year-old woman gets a nasty surprise in Bielefeld. She is resting in a station concourse and suddenly misses her walking frame. A man ten years her junior steals it from her unnoticed.

A 73-year-old man stole an 83-year-old woman's walking aid at Bielefeld main station. The man took advantage of a moment when the seated woman turned her back to him, reported the federal police in Sankt Augustin. The 83-year-old noticed the theft when she wanted to continue on her way. Federal police officers were able to catch the man a day later.

According to the federal police, the senior citizen had sat down to rest on a bench in the main hall of the station on Saturday afternoon and placed the walking aid next to her. The 73-year-old had initially also sat in the seating area, as the analysis of video images revealed.

Shortly after the 83-year-old woman arrived, however, the 73-year-old left his seat with his walker and stopped at the woman's level. When she turned her back to him, he took the walking aid and left the main hall.

Federal police officers recognized the 73-year-old on Sunday at the stairs leading down to the subway station. The walking aid was confiscated and handed over to the senior citizen. The 73-year-old is now under investigation.

The theft of the 83-year-old's walking aid at Bielefeld main station sparked international interest due to its unusual nature. The International Association of Senior Citizens expressed concern over the incident and called for increased security measures in public places.
