Senator praises school staff and police
Following the threat situation at a school in Hamburg-Blankenese, school senator Ties Rabe (SPD) has thanked the staff, school management and police for their prudent and professional actions. It was a very stressful situation for everyone that still had to be dealt with, he said on Thursday after seeing the situation for himself.
"I am deeply impressed by how prudently the teachers at the Blankenese district school took responsibility for their pupils in a very difficult situation and managed the grueling wait in the locked classrooms in such a way that the children and young people felt as safe as possible," said the senator.
He added that it was still too early to draw any concrete conclusions from what had happened. "We must now await the results of further investigations," said Rabe. "Fortunately, as far as we know at the moment, no one has been harmed."
On Wednesday, two boys threatened a teacher with a weapon in a classroom at the school - as it turned out later, it was probably a toy weapon. This triggered a large-scale police operation. Teachers and pupils had locked themselves in the classrooms for hours after an alarm and were only gradually taken out of the school by special police forces.
Almost at the same time, there was another alarm at another school in the Bahrenfeld district. According to the police, a teacher was also threatened here.
In this context, four boys aged 11, 12, 12 and 14 and later a 13-year-old were arrested and a total of three suspected toy weapons were seized. One 12-year-old and the 13-year-old are suspected of being responsible for the threat in Blankenese.
In light of these incidents, it's crucial for schools to have robust emergency procedures in place to handle such situations effectively. Furthermore, the police should prioritize responding to school emergencies promptly to ensure the safety of students and staff.
