Black-Red Senate - Senate will present strategies against skills shortage

The Berlin Senate has announced a strategy for securing specialized workers in the capital. "The process is expected to begin after the summer break and be completed by 2025," said Labor Senator Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD) after a Senate meeting. The goal is to create good conditions for meeting the demand for specialized workers in the future.

For the Senate, securing specialized workers is a top priority that is becoming increasingly important. In various sectors, from nursing to deep construction, there are imminent shortages, warned Kiziltepe.

Workshop Series on Goals and Measures

Planned is the formation of a working group on this topic, in which as many Senates departments as possible are to participate. In addition, there is to be a three-part workshop series to clarify the goals of the strategy and the question of how they can be achieved.

Representatives of industry associations and trade unions are also to participate. "All involved parties will be heard in this process," said Kiziltepe. The Institute for Social Research and Political Science will oversee the organizational and content aspects of the process.

Where are unnecessary double structures?

A stocktaking of previous measures is necessary. This should also involve checking their strengths and weaknesses and where there are unnecessary double structures - that is, where work is being done unnecessarily on the same topic at different locations.

According to the Senator, there is a need for action, for example, in the field of training - the ruling parties have already agreed that the number of training places should increase by at least 2,000 by the end of April 2025, otherwise a training levy is to be introduced.

Furthermore, Kiziltepe mentioned the integration of refugees more effectively and quickly into the labor market and, for example, accelerating the recognition of foreign vocational degrees.
