campaign - Scholz promises stable pension level for decades
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will secure pensions in Germany for the long term. A law will be brought about to ensure "a stable pension level in Germany for the next decades," he said at the campaign kickoff of the Saxon Social Democrats in Dresden. "They deserve it, those who have worked and paid in for decades." Pension is not a welfare. A stable pension level is a necessary guarantee of the welfare state.
Decisions regarding Ukraine must be made with reason
Scholz spoke at the beginning of his speech on the Schlossplatz about Russia's war against Ukraine. He assured Ukraine of further support. "At the same time, we will do everything to prevent this war from escalating into a war between Russia and NATO." Decisions will always be made with reason - that's why he didn't give in to every wish. "We won't fulfill all the wishes, such as launching our own rockets and planes, or sending soldiers there. Support for Ukraine will happen differently."
Eastern Germany is a High-Tech Location for Scholz
Scholz promised further support for a strong economy in Eastern Germany. The government will provide the necessary funds "so that Saxony, and the East of Germany, becomes the place where most semiconductors in Europe are produced." The East is a High-Tech Location. Of the 19 projects for the relocation of semiconductor production in Europe, 13 are in Germany. Germany is the only economy in Europe where more than three percent of economic output is spent on research and development. That's also the reason why Germany is so strong in exports. "That must also be the benchmark for our politics in the future."
Scholz admits that the infrastructure in Germany has been neglected for decades
Scholz acknowledged that the infrastructure in Germany has been run down for decades. "Not enough has been invested for years. The CDU/CSU were responsible for this and didn't take action." His government will now ensure that Germany finally picks up speed and invests more in roads, railways, and digital infrastructure.
At the end of the campaign rally, Scholz also addressed the election in Saxony. "A good government in Saxony can only be achieved with a coalition government. And a good government in Saxony can only be achieved with a strong social democratic party in the next state parliament." Similarly, the Saxon SPD state chairperson Petra Köpping had expressed herself earlier. Saxony needs a stable government. The CDU cannot provide this alone. "It doesn't matter who comes first in the vote count. What matters is that we can form a stable coalition. And that requires us."
On the sidelines of the campaign rally, supporters of the far-right party Free Saxony demonstrated against Scholz and called him a "war monger." The police were present with around 230 officers and reported a trouble-free course of the demonstrations.
In Saxony, a new state parliament will be elected on September 1st. In opinion polls, the current coalition of CDU, Greens, and SPD no longer has a majority. The Greens and SPD are concerned about re-entry into the state parliament.
