RWE intends to construct more hydrogen gas power stations in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW).
Electricity production through water-powered gas power plants is on the rise, with RWE planning to construct these facilities at various locations in North Rhine-Westphalia, including Weisweiler, Werne, and Voerde.
German energy giant, RWE, is moving forward with its ambitions to build hydrogen-powered gas and steam turbine power plants. Following its initial plans for the construction of such a plant in Weisweiler, the company has now announced that it will construct one at the Gersteinwerk in Werne. RWE currently operates several natural gas blocks at this site.
At Gersteinwerk, a hydrogen-powered gas and steam turbine power plant with a capacity of around 800 megawatts could be built. It is anticipated that the plant could be in operation by 2030, with an initial operation running on at least 50% hydrogen. The aim is to fully operate the plant with hydrogen later on.
Final investment decisions pending
RWE has commissioned a consortium of Ansaldo Energia (Italy) and Tecnicas Reunidas (Spain) to handle the planning, as was done in the case of Weisweiler. Preliminary planning work for the approval process is already underway. However, RWE is withholding a final investment decision until the network connection, regulatory framework, and financial viability of the project have been confirmed.
RWE has not yet revealed the estimated costs of the project. RWE Generation's CEO, Nikolaus Valerius, commented, "We're committed to playing a part in ensuring a green energy supply and achieving a coal phase-out by 2030. We'll only make a final investment decision once the site is connected to a hydrogen network and the operating conditions are favorable."
Tenders for hydrogen-powered gas power plants
The federal government has announced its plans to create a framework for tendering hydrogen-powered gas power plants as part of its power plant strategy. "We intend to take part in these tenders," clarified RWE.
Under the latest plans for building a hydrogen infrastructure in Germany, the Gersteinwerk could be located near a hydrogen transport pipeline in the future. RWE has set a target of erecting hydrogen-powered gas power plants with a total capacity of 3,000 megawatts across its German power plant sites by 2030. Along with Weisweiler and Werne, a plant is also being planned for Voerde, where the company aims to produce green hydrogen on an industrial scale.

RWE's plans for hydrogen-powered gas power stations in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) extend beyond Werne and Weisweiler, as they also intend to construct one at the Voerde site, which is known for its potential to produce green hydrogen on an industrial scale.
The construction of hydrogen-powered gas and steam turbine power plants in North Rhine-Westphalia is not only limited to RWE but also forms part of the German government's strategy, with tenders being announced for such projects.
RWE's operations in Gersteinwerk, North Rhine-Westphalia, could benefit from the planned hydrogen transport pipeline, making it a potential site for a hydrogen-powered gas and steam turbine power plant with a capacity of around 800 megawatts, as envisioned by the energy giant.
