RWE constructs wind farm in the North Sea.
RWE, a German energy company, is planning to develop another offshore wind farm in the country's waters. This project, called Nordseecluster, is slated to become operational by 2029 and aims to increase offshore capacity threefold by the end of the decade.
Based in Essen, RWE has given the go-ahead for offshore wind farms in the North Sea. With a combined capacity of 1.6 gigawatts, the project will be carried out in two stages, the company says. Construction on the first phase is set to commence next year.
The wind projects in the North Sea will be situated approximately 50 kilometers north of the island of Juist. Upon completion, these wind farms will produce approximately 6.5 terawatt-hours of electricity each year. "This is a positive development for Germany's energy transition and RWE," remarked Sven Utermöhlen, who heads the offshore wind division at RWE.
The initial section, Cluster A, featuring a capacity of 660 megawatts, is expected to be operational from 2025. This segment will consist of 44 wind turbines and be connected to the power grid by early 2027. The second phase, Nordseecluster B, with a total capacity of 900 megawatts, is projected to commence operations in 2029, per RWE.
Currently, RWE manages 19 wind farms in the oceans globally, with six located off the German coast. By 2030, the company aims to triple its offshore wind production from the current 3.3 gigawatts to 10 gigawatts.
