Rhein: Coalition with SPD not a rejection of black-green coalition
According to Hesse's Minister President Boris Rhein (CDU), the decision to form a coalition with the SPD is not a fundamental rejection of black-green alliances at state or federal level. "We have made a decision for Hesse and not for the federal government," Rhein told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND). "This is not a rejection of black-green alliances in other states or at federal level."
Under certain conditions, alliances between the CDU and the Greens are still possible. "For the federal government, these questions will only arise in two years' time after the federal elections, and we don't yet know what the situation will look like then," said Rhein. The Hessian CDU had opted for the Social Democrats due to overlaps in content. "Our decision has to do in particular with internal security, migration and social cohesion. There is more overlap with the SPD on these issues."
On the question of whether the formation of a black-red coalition in Hesse was a test run for 2025, Rhein said: "At a time of multiple crises, I think it is right that the most traditional and deeply rooted parties in society come together to provide joint answers and formulate clear solutions."
In the context of Hesse's coalition with the SPD, Boris Rhein emphasized that this decision does not necessarily rule out black-green alliances in other states or at the federal level in the future. Furthermore, should the situation in Germany change after the federal elections in two years, opportunities for a CDU-Green coalition at the federal level might emerge.
