Rex Heuermann appears with his attorney Michael Brown at Suffolk County Court in Riverhead, New York, on January 16.

Rex Heuermann, a suspect in the Gilgo Beach murders, is expected to face indictment for two additional killings, reports claim.

Heuermann was taken into custody in July and has been charged with taking lives in connection to the deaths of four women whose bodies were found bound with belts or tape and wrapped in burlap along Long Island's Gilgo Beach in 2010.

He has pleaded innocent and insists he didn't commit these crimes.

The female victims – Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello and Maureen Brainard-Barnes – gained notoriety as the "Gilgo Four."

At least 11 sets of remains have been found near Long Island's Suffolk County's waterfront since 2010.

Authorities suspect Heuermann of leading a double life, suggesting his spouse and offspring were unaware of the alleged atrocities, and allege his family was away during the time of the "Gilgo Four" killings, giving him unrestricted time to carry out his nefarious plans for each victim. The prosecution had previously stated, "This allowed Heuermann ‘unfettered time to execute his plans for each victim without any fear that his family would uncover or learn of his involvement in these crimes.'"

Less than a week after his arrest, Heuermann's wife proceeded to file for divorce. However, she now declares she doesn't think he had a role in the murders he's charged with.

In January, Heuermann's legal representative, Michael Brown, told reporters, "He's not guilty of these charges. He looks forward to fighting them in court."

'We're not close to finishing this investigation,' authorities say

Law enforcement sources disclosed to CNN that during searches of the Manorville region of Long Island and Heuermann's residence earlier this year, evidence was found that aided the police.

Investigators suppose that due to "offender characteristics" of serial killers, there could be additional alleged crimes.

"In most of these cases, a serial killer doesn't start killing in his 40s," a law enforcement officer briefed on the situation asserted.

This line of thought prompted investigators not only to pursue the identification of unidentified victims, re-evaluate former dump sites, and conduct extensive searches of Heuermann's home, but also to re-examine unsolved missing persons cases.

Investigators are also analyzing seemingly unconnected unsolved homicides with apparently similar elements among the victims, crime scenes or state of the bodies.

"We're not close to wrapping up this probe," one official participating in the extensive investigation mentioned. "We're very much at the start."
