Extremism - Reul welcomes the ban of the Islamic Center: 'overdue'

Nordrhein-Westfalen's Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) welcomes the ban of the nationally active Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH). "The IZH is the long arm of the Iranian Regime, bringing the ideology of the Islamic Revolution to the people in Germany," Reul told the German Press Agency in Düsseldorf in response to a query.

"Behind a blue facade, there has long been more than just a place of worship, but a propaganda station for Islamists," the CDU politician stated. The ban of the IZH is overdue and is an appropriate and important signal against Islamic Extremism on German soil.

"This means one less broadcasting tower for aggressive anti-Semitism and constitutionally harmful thought," Reul added. "However, it is clear that bans are not the last resort for preventing extremism." Political education, prevention, and exit programs are necessary.

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) had previously banned the IZH, which, according to the assessment of the Constitutional Protection, is a "significant propaganda center of Iran in Europe." Raids took place in several federal states. According to the Düsseldorf Interior Ministry, the central bank has been informed that the IZH holds two accounts with them.

  1. The ban on the Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH) in North Rhine-Westphalia is seen as an important signal against Islamic Extremism in Germany, as stated by Interior Minister Herbert Reul from the CDU party.
  2. The German Press Agency reported from Düsseldorf that Reul described the IZH as a propaganda station for Islamists, behind a seemingly innocuous blue facade.
  3. This ban comes after federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) previously declared the IZH as a significant propaganda center of Iran in Europe, citing the Constitutional Protection's assessment.
  4. Following the ban, Reul mentioned that the German Interior Ministry has informed the central bank of the IZH holding two accounts with them, indicating financial ties to the controversial organization.
