Upcoming heating bills for numerous renters might not bring any joyful news, as heating expenses have seen a steep hike over the past year. The moderate heating usage and the mild winter might only provide brief relief.

Real estate service provider Ista has conducted a study on heating costs for rental residences in Germany, disclosing quite a rise in specific instances in 2023. The price per kilowatt hour escalated by a staggering 7 percent for district heating, 34 percent for heating oil, and a whopping 44 percent for natural gas, based on their analysis of approximately 800,000 heating bills. These numbers consider the implementation of state price caps for gas and district heating in 2023.

The decrease in heating expense at the start of the year and the mild temperatures later on helped to lower the overall heating usage by merely an average of 2 percent. Predicated on an average 70 square meter living room, annual heating costs saw a 2 percent increase to 792 euros for district heating, a 37 percent growth to 817 euros for natural gas, and a 30 percent hike to 1095 euros for heating oil. Hagen Lessing, the CEO of Ista, noted that tenants would face higher bills for their homes than they ever have before. Ista predicts that more supplemental payments will be owed by many households for gas and oil heating systems.

Ista also conducted an examination into monthly heating data derived from 350,000 homes within the 20 most remarkable German cities, evaluating the 2023/24 heating season from September to April. The results indicate that consumption was lower in Stuttgart, by approximately one percent, compared to the previous year. Second on the list was Dresden with a 1 percent rise in consumption, and Munich boasted a 2 percent higher energy consumption than the year before. Bringing up the rear was Bielefeld, with a 12 percent larger energy consumption increase. On a national scale, Ista projects a 5 percent hike in overall heating energy usage in the 2023/24 heating period, after adjusting for varying weather conditions.
