Reforestation in Lower Saxony is advancing

Drought and storms have destroyed many forest areas in the past few years. But forest regeneration is progressing. And there are also other good news for the forest.

forest - Reforestation in Lower Saxony is advancing

In Lower Saxony, the reforestation of damaged forest areas is progressing well. The Lower Saxony Forests confirmed this, looking at new figures for the damaged area. The affected forest area of the Lower Saxony forest, which has been damaged since 2017, now covers around 50,000 hectares. The Lower Saxony forest makes up roughly one third of the total forest area in the federal state and is managed by the Lower Saxony Forests.

Since 2017, many trees in Lower Saxony have fallen victim to storms and the pine weevil, which spread rapidly due to heat and drought. However, this should not detract from the fact that "we are making great progress in the reforestation of the former damaged areas," said a spokesperson for the Lower Saxony Forests.

In the previous planting season, approximately 2.6 million seedlings were planted in the Harz region alone. Therefore, on a steadily growing part of the 50,000 hectare damaged area, there is already a very young forest. Instead of monoculture forests of spruce, it is often a mix of various tree species. The exact size of the new forest area cannot be determined, however, due to the dynamic development of the trees.

At the same time, the pine weevil development in this year has been reversed, according to the Lower Saxony Forests. This is partly due to efforts to contain the pest - infested trees are felled before the weevils spread to other trees. Partly, it is also due to the fact that there is significantly more rainfall in this summer than in previous years. The Lower Saxony Forests therefore expect the new damaged area in this year to be smaller than in previous years.

  1. The ongoing drought in recent years has posed a challenge to the forest clearing efforts in Lower Saxony, affecting the survival and growth of new seedlings.
  2. In response to the rising concern about the impact of climate change on Forestry in Brunswick, the Lower Saxony Forests have introduced diverse tree species to increase resilience against environmental factors.
  3. Theproposed forest clearing plans in certain areas of Lower Saxony have raised concerns among environmentalists, who are advocating for a more balanced approach that preserves the natural biodiversity of the forest ecosystem.
  4. The latest weather forecast predicts a more favorable climate for the forest areas in Lower Saxony, with sufficient rainfall to support the growth and survival of the newly planted trees.
